How to play Klondike: make space before you rush
A first-game guide to the familiar seven-column solitaire.
Aim for four complete suits
Move cards into the foundation piles in suit order, starting with the aces. On the main table, place a card below the next higher rank in the opposite color: a red six can go on a black seven.
Reveal a hidden card
Before taking another card from the stock, look for a legal move that uncovers a face-down card. It gives you more information and may create another useful move; it does not guarantee a win.
Plan your empty column
In standard Klondike, an empty column needs a king or a run beginning with a king. Emptying a column without a king ready may not help immediately.
Check the exact variant
Draw-one, draw-three, redeal limits, and foundation-return rules vary. Read the selected game’s rules before using advice from a different Klondike variant.
Try it
Practice: find one move that reveals a card. Explain what new choice it gives you before making the next move.
