FreeCell: keep an empty cell working for you

Why filling every free cell can stop a promising game.

  1. See the whole problem

Standard FreeCell deals the deck at the start. The four free cells each hold one card; they are temporary parking spaces, not extra foundations.

  2. Build with alternating colors

On the main table, build downward with alternating colors. Empty columns give you more room to rearrange cards.

  3. Reserve some room

Before parking a card, decide how you will retrieve it. Sequence moves depend on the temporary spaces available, so filling the last cell can block a move you expected to make.

  4. Think one card at a time

When a sequence will not move, work out how you would transfer it using single-card moves. This often exposes the missing temporary space.

Try it

Practice: identify a buried low card and describe a route to uncover it while leaving at least one temporary space.
