How to play Baker’s Dozen: an empty column stays empty

A quieter change of pace if you already know Klondike.

  1. Follow rank, not color

In standard Baker’s Dozen, build the playing piles downward by rank without alternating colors. Move one card at a time.

  2. Watch the kings

Kings begin at the bottom of their piles because you cannot refill an empty pile. The initial arrangement matters.

  3. Make emptiness a decision

Unlike FreeCell or Klondike, an empty column cannot become a new workspace. Before clearing a pile, check whether its last card could provide a useful destination.

  4. Work toward the foundations

The aim is to move the cards to the foundations. Examine the currently exposed cards and decide which move opens access rather than merely rearranging the same obstacles.

Try it

Practice: before your first move, identify one pile whose exposed card could serve as a destination for another card.
